044 A Walk Around Manila

Raymond & Ella

Raymond & Ella

The Intramuros, walled city, is close by. We walked through the gate and into some narrow streets in the ancient Spanish Fortress. It’s tough to get pictures due to the wires and closeness of the buildings. We sought out the Cathedral and ran into Raymond and Ella from New Brunswick, Canada. They are serious backpackers. The seek the best places, sights and prices. He is semi retired HR Specialist and she a teacher. We found a little re-developed area and a the cute Cafe Barbara. The food was a bit expensive and not that great but the stories we heard and shared made up for it.

Most of Intramuros is simple almost squalled yet in the midst of it is a building that has been re-constructed and quite beautiful. The guards are in light blue uniform and hats with the brim turned up in front somehow reminiscent of the Spanish Colonial days. Shaded, the stones kept the passageways cool on this one of the hottest days. The walls and this building were constructd in the 1590. They’ve cooled a lot of overheated,  citizens, including us, in their time.
