144 Call Off the Caldera Ride

Family on the Rim

Family on the Rim

Most tourists arise at 4:30 AM and take jeep or horse around the rim for views of both Bromo and the perfect cone of Batuk. We chose to not. Maybe a little guilt as we heard the others leaving but it was easy to roll over and snooze. By the time we got up they were returning. Liz stood on the rom and said, “This is the best view of all, by far.” That made us glad to have skipped the early morning trek.

There are quite a few locals milling around trying to sell souvenirs. The guys with the horses continued to urge us to ride down. Liz’s comment solidified our new plan to just have breakfast then get on the bikes and roll downward.

We enjoyed breakfast with our new family. We talked about getting back down to Probolinggo, spending the night then taking the train to Jakarta. They are suggesting that there is little to see there. We told them that we wanted to see the school that Barrack Obama attended. Charles outlined a few other points of interest. I reminded Cat that originally I wanted to see Jakarta. Then came the Bali idea. Thanks to that detour we’re now 2 weeks behind schedule.

Liz told Cat about the wonderful Hotel where they’re staying in Surabaya. So, the new plan, cycle down then train to Surabaya, ship the bikes and change to the fast train there,
