Offerings to Temple

Ari is a freight driver, turned tour driver. He began pointing out and trying to explain sights along the road. This woman is taking offerings to Temple, as the Nyepi extends for several days. The road was all up. The final 10 Ks were so steep we would have pushed for at least two hours. Cat made the right call.

Pine tree forests open occasionally to views of the plains and coast below. Then around a corner and there it is, Lake Batur.

Lake Batur

Though our deal with Ari was a ride to the top. He took it upon himself to make sure we found a place to stay. His boss had said that we’d find lots of Hotels but that wasn’t the case. Ari asked often and tried several places, one up a hill so steep the smell of burning clutch was thick in the little truck. Thanks to Ari’s persistence we found that there’s only one, Lake View Hotel. It’s perched on the rim of the caldera.
