When Corregidor was finally overrun by the Japanese army General Wainwright disabled the Big Guns rather than turn them over to the enemy.  We stood in awe and wondered how they could possibly have been able to remove the huge barrels from them. Then the Ranger explained, “They loaded shells in each after unbolting them from the stand. When that final round was fired the big barrels recoiled and flew to the ground.”
