142 Van to the Volcano

Mount the Van to the Mount

Mount the Van to the Mount

After a grueling 2+ hours we landed at the Probolinggo Station. We’d have missed it if Cat hadn’t seen, almost at the last minute. Struggle, we got the bikes down and I leaned them against the train for a photo. They are so into schedule that we had to hustle to get them off as they began to pull out.

A young German couple waiting for the train to Surabaya told us that the Mountain was a great experience. They also clued us in to the cost of a Van. So, when we connected with a young guy in front of the station he started at 300,000 Rupiah, Cat worked him down to 250,000 for us and bikes that would ride on the roof.  (Big bucks but actually only about $25, US.

Our original plan to cycle up went up in heat waves as they started the trip up. It didn’t feel steep at first but when they finally hit the hill we knew we’d made the right decision. We thought it was STEEP, then it turned really steep. Originally we’d thought of staying at place called The Grand Bromo. Fortunately we chose to ask for the Lava View. GB was closed and way down hill from Lava View. The place is pretty primitive but the view, spectacular.
