089 A Boat to Kampung Ayer, the Water Village

A Visit to the Water Village
A Visit to the Water Village

From the shore it looks like a collection of shacks on stilts. Danny assured us it is anything but that. Our boat driver lives there and will allow us a visit to his family home. Though the lifestyle is traditional they have all modern conveniences. (Well as wewould learn, all but plumbing.) Danny directed our ride around interesting places like the school and government buildings on stilts.  The homes ranged from moderate to quite large and extensive.

006-water-village-houseThere is a feeling of everyday family life. Danny explained that families here stay together. He is 30 and still living at home. Not married yet but he is in a long distance relationship with a Japanese girl who lives in Tokyo.

Danny shared that life in Brunei is quite good. Oil has made the Sultan very rich. He even owns a Black-hawk Helicopter. The good news for Bruneians, he is benevolent. Kampung Ayer dwellers also own a lot on shore and most have built a second home there. Nearly everyone owns more than one car, too. When we commented on how little traffic there is and the quiet Danny said taht in most neighborhoods it is illegal to honk your horn. How would a Jeepny driver ever survive here?
